October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, making it the perfect time for to review your cyber defenses.
Few items to consider:
Multi-Factor Authentication: I am still noticing lot of businesses not enforcing MFA. Email is one of the top security threats and MFA will greatly help reduce breaches.
Encryption: Consider using encryption feature when you send email with sensitive information.
Software/Hardware Updates: Check all your servers, laptops, desktops, network equipment and make sure all are up to date with patches. Most (if not all) vendors now release updates on a regular basis, and you should get on the patching bus.
Cleanup users accounts: If you are not up to date on cleaning up your users, this is the time to do. This not only reduces the risk of breach but also avoids paying for any licenses that are not being used. Consider doing it for all your business applications.
Training: Please consider providing security awareness training to your employees. They are the last defense in the chain.
Removable Devices: Review the data on your removable devices (if you still use them), and consider cleaning up any sensitive data that is not required.
Vulnerability/Penetration Testing: If you have equipment on-prem or in cloud, consider having a penetration test so you are aware of the weaknesses to address.
By addressing these areas, you can reduce the risk of security breaches.
Don't be complacent. Stay Safe!
